Slow down (Try not to cry...)

I just sent this to our customers via an email, but I felt that it was important enough to also share here.

Summer is winding down and back to school sales are everywhere. It's time to think about packing lunches, signing permission slips and driving carpool. As the Summer of 2016 is almost in the books and we start the school year, my family prepares for many changes.

Our oldest and only son will be a freshman in high school (gasp!). Our middle one (oldest daughter) will be a seventh grader and our baby will start kindergarten. I am holding on to all three of them with clenched fists and white knuckles because I know how quickly time passes once school starts.

The weeks fly by as we rush through our daily activities of school, work, sports and church. I love the spontaneity of summer but I appreciate the more scheduled days of the school year.

With the changes we're experiencing as a family and the new feature Facebook has of showing your memories, I have been reflecting on how quickly time passes. I find myself in this conflict of emotions:

On one hand wishing I could rewind and go back to when my son was a toddler and his chubby little hand seemed so tiny in mine. When he played with trucks and Legos and made all sorts of sound effects while he pretended he was defeating bad guys.

But on the other hand, I love that he is becoming a man with a strong work ethic and a keen sense of humor that makes me laugh out loud daily. I am torn between wanting them all to stay small enough that I can keep my hand on them, yet excited about our future of high school sports and proms and them driving me to their activities.

It sounds so cliche but it's true....time flies and we never get today back. We must choose to enjoy each moment, to be in the moment with them because before we know it, things change and the children are grown.

When that happens, I want to be ready and I want to be able to say that I was present with them, that I enjoyed each day and that I treasured my time with them.

The music video above was recently shared with me by a good friend. We watched it together and cried over how we wish time would slow down. I hope it blesses you today and reminds you to slow down and enjoy these last few days of summer before the chaos of the school year begins.

Thank you for this song with a beautiful message. I have 2 children, the oldest is waiting in heaven with my mother and pop and the youngest is the father of 2 beautiful girls whom are growing up so fast that I wish I could turn back the clock and yet I am excited to see what lovely young ladies they will grow up to be. I would like to be able to turn back time to when he took his little blanket everywhere and yet it’s amazing to see what a wonderful man and father he is turning into. Again, thank you for sharing!
