The Importance of the Off-Season

by Amy Crouse April 20, 2015

We love the bold, beautiful spirit of professional skier and  Olympic hopeful Annie  Pokorny .  Bolder Band Headband wants to follow her through the trials and tribulations and elation of training for the big show: the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. Every month Annie will share some insight into her training so we can train along with her and follow our dreams as well.

Band of the Month:  Fancy Bands! It's the off- season, so I'm getting fancy!

Exercise of the month:  All things vertical: April is play month for skiers!  It's warm, there's snow, but there are also the beginning of summer activities. This month, I'll be on the climbing wall, running uphill, and skinning up ski resorts to ski back down.  Skinning up a mountain is when you put sticky tape (called skins) on the base of backcountry skis and walk up the slope. At the top, you take the skins of and ski down!

Challenge I overcame in March:  Ending the season is a challenge in itself. While you're exhausted from five months of travel and racing, you still want to have solid results to end your season on a good note. Keeping energy  high is important for both you and your teammates at the end, which is hard to do when your body is tired. I ended up getting horribly ill before the final races of the year (a sign of just how broken   my body was), but in my last race of health ,  I finished 8th in the strongest domestic field of the year, which gave me something to celebrate.

Goals for April:  Find balance between adventure and rest. While I have the chance to take advantage of so many outdoor opportunities, I'm keep ing in mind that this is my only month of off-season a year, and  in order to hit May training with energy, I need to be rested. Activities like y oga are restorative and active and  they let me get the best of both worlds.

M otto of the month:  "P atience, grasshopper" there are so many fun summer outdoor activities to  do,  I have to remember that I have plenty of time to do them!
