Bolder Band Raises Money for Autism Speaks

by Amy Crouse March 16, 2015 5 Comments

You might know this lady’s beautiful face because she has modeled for us for years, but I know her heart and wanted to share part of it with you.

Alicia Short is a sweet friend who I met at CrossFIt years ago and actually shared with her one of the first prototypes of Bolder Band Headbands. We both were looking for something to keep the hair and sweat out of our eyes. “I like (Bolder Band Headbands) because I can wear them from the time I wake up in the morning to when I go to bed. They are very functional and comfortable,” she says. Her favorite band is Daydream Believer because it goes with most of her workout clothes. “They replace the baseball cap over ‘Saturday hair’.”

Alicia was kind enough to share her input with me, and do some modeling for us, so it makes sense that our relationship comes full circle and Bolder Bands helps her and her family during National Autism Awareness Month in April.  Alicia is the mother of three beautiful children: Journey, 15, Sunny, 13 and her youngest, Danté 11, who has high-functioning Autism. Since we love Alicia and her family so much, Bolder Bands wants to support them, so in April we will be debuting our Autism Awareness Headband, with part of the proceeds to be donated to Autism Speaks.

“It is stressful to raise a child with Autism or any special needs,” Alicia says, “so CrossFit is therapy for me.”

Danté is sweet boy who Alicia describes as strong-willed. He is also engaging and compassionate toward others, which is the opposite of what people think of with an Autistic child. “He loves hanging out with family and friends,” she said. “He is really kind-hearted and sweet….He likes to play tennis, swim, bowl and play catch.”

According to the Autism Speaks website,Autism Speaks was founded in February 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, grandparents of a child with autism. Since then, Autism Speaks has grown into the world's leading autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. “I like Autism Speaks because it is constantly researching the cause of Autism and trying to help families,” Alicia says. “They are a huge starting point and resource for families with children diagnosed with Autism.”

Please join Bolder Band Headbands and Alicia’s family to raise money for this very worthy cause!

I was so excited when I saw an Autism Awarness Bolder Band. I ordered mine a couple days ago and can’t wait to get it in. I have a 10yr old son with high functioning Autism so anyway I can show support I will.

This story was great, especially since I also have a son with Autism whose name is also Dante’. I don’t really know Alicia, but I knew she had a son with Autism. I forgot that her son and my son shared more then Autism, they also share first name, spelled exactly the same!
