BOLDERBand’s “We Value All Mothers” write-in contest winner is Natalie Walters. BOLDERBand picked four blog submissions to tell their stories of mothering, and win a BOLDERBand of their choice.
Natalie Walters may have not planned to get pregnant at 19, but she knew what to do when he came: follow her mother’s advice: “The biggest thing my mom taught me was to put my kids first, and my needs second.”
This Texas girl promised her parents and brother nine years ago that even though she was pregnant she would finish her college degree in four years. And with their help, she did. Natalie has a bachelor’s of science in criminal justice from the University of North Texas.
“People told me to get an abortion. I don’t think so…I had my goals set they may have been harder to reach but having a baby wasn’t going to change things.”
Natalie, now 28 and living in Midlothian, Texas, with her husband of almost nine years and her two children Austin, 8, and Kayla, 6, is confident she made the right decision in choosing to keep her baby. “It was hard balancing schoolwork and exams, but with my parents and husband’s help, I could do it,” she said. Then her senior year she found out she was pregnant with her second child. “Without my family’s support I could have never finished.” Part of the support Natalie found was in other moms when she joined the Cedar Hill Tots and Moms group. “They accepted me even though I was obviously younger. They became some of my best friends,” Natalie said. “We still get together and celebrate birthdays and have girls nights.”
After her youngest started first grade, Natalie went to work full-time at the Cedar Hill Police Department as a Public Service Officer.“I work nights so I can take my kids to school, sleep while they are at school, and then take them to their events after school…they love it,” said the busy mom, who still makes time for a run. “I am happy with the BOLDERBand, it really stays in place,” she said of her GI Jill BOLDERBand. “I have lost so many headbands on runs, so this great!”
Natalie knows what it takes to work hard, but being a mom is her top priority: “My kids complete me and are my world,” she recently wrote to Bbolder.com. “I love them more than anyone knows! They keep me going with giggles and fun times. I’m blessed to be a mom and my kids’ hugs and kisses complete me. To me a mom is a caregiver and a person you look up too. Lastly a mom is someone you love with all your heart!”
BolderBand honors Natalie and all moms for the daily sacrifices they make for their children!!
